When I tell people I teach kindergarten, I get a variety of reactions that usually fall between \u201chow adorable\u201d to \u201cbless your soul\u201d to \u201cthe year of nose-picking, huh?\u201d If there was one thing I could tell people that don\u2019t have much experience with Kindergarten (including my past self), it\u2019s that kindergarteners, especially the ones in our community, need to be given credit for being the amazing little humans they are.<\/p>\n

As a Kinder teacher, you get to experience the year in which students are skimming the surface of exploring their identities, their beliefs, their values and understandings of the world around them and the people in it. You get to experience the year where the filter doesn\u2019t exist.<\/p>\n

As adults, we\u2019ve lived years of developing this filter that keeps us from sharing parts of ourselves. Kindergarteners are often the best models for showing vulnerability and authenticity. And when they share parts of their world, they encourage you to share parts of yours too. If there is anything my kids have taught me, it\u2019s that vulnerability and authenticity aren\u2019t traits we develop, they were qualities that were always there. We were once five, wild-minded, silly, open-hearted and curious with the world. In their respective ways, they love to remind you of that.<\/p>\n

And this, my friends, is a beautiful thing.<\/p>\n

Here are some particular moments, both silly and thought-provoking, that show examples of kindergarteners and their unfiltered nature.<\/p>\n

\"math\"Sometimes, they share advice:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe had a garage sale, but no one came. I say never have a garage sale if no one wants to buy your things.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you want your friends to be nice to you, you have to tell them nicely to be nice.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sometimes, they act as a miniature Dalai-lama:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cEveryone has their own future.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe can\u2019t be mean, that\u2019s not a good life.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you\u2019re a boy or a girl, it doesn\u2019t matter. You can like whatever you want.\u201d<\/p>\n

“I’ve changed my ways.” I ask him what’s changed,\u00a0and he responds: \u00a0<\/em>“Life…just life.”<\/p>\n

Sometimes, they just want their needs to be met:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI miss my mom. Can I hug you, then can I hug a Kimochi<\/a>?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI wish I could eat hotdogs every day, especially when I take a bath.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t want to be here. I want to be home. I need to play goat simulator.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSquishy bananas make me sad. Can I have a good banana?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is my dad. He went to jail. I missed him so much.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sometimes, they want to let their feelings be known:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m the queen of everything!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou make me so angry, I am going to keep looking at you with my serious eyes!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIf I finish my work, can I spend a week in calm castle?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m scared of aliens because one time they abduct me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI love you all the way to school, I love you all the way to my grandma\u2019s house, I love you all the way to God.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFor my birthday, I\u2019m going to Disneyland hotel, and you\u2019re going to miss me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"Clip\"Sometimes, they practice the art of negotiation with striking candor:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

“If we listen and follow your directions again, will you wear that flower dress tomorrow?”<\/p>\n

\u201cI want to be Elsa for Halloween because she has powers better than Batman\u201d A boy in the<\/em> class says: <\/em>\u201cThat\u2019s not true! Batman is better!\u201d A different boy rebuttals: <\/em>\u201cElsa can beat batman because she can freeze him and the whole place.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cCome to my house again. My mom will give you more jello.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIf I\u2019m good, can my clip go on your head, then my head?\u201d<\/p>\n

And sometimes, they remind us of what it is to be curious, unpredictable, and a little bit silly: <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHe said I have a potato in my pantalones<\/em>!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat kind of super power does an apple give us?\u201d The same student a couple minutes later sticks an apple on a fork while shouting:<\/em> \u201cI\u2019ve created a healthy lollipop!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cKnock, Knock.\u201d Who\u2019s there? <\/em>\u201cNothing\u201d Nothing who? <\/em>\u201cI said there was nothing!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI know your real name, but it\u2019s okay, I won\u2019t tell anyone because it\u2019s a secret!\u201d<\/p>\n
