I have never been a data person.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve always been ALL about the relationships. I\u2019m a people person. I don\u2019t typically care about percentages,\u00a0ROI or\u00a0standard deviation.<\/p>\n

I think a good teacher typically knows when they\u2019re reaching their students. A good teacher should just\u00a0know\u00a0<\/em>whether their kids have developed mastery around a standard.<\/p>\n

\"87\"<\/a>But then, I started working at\u00a0Rocketship.<\/p>\n

Rocketship is all about the data.<\/p>\n

In fact, we have DATA DAYS to collect the data, analyze the data and then use the data in meaningful ways to drive our instruction.<\/p>\n

For a while, I wasn\u2019t too sure about the need for so many numbers.<\/p>\n

I didn\u2019t understand why we were placing so much importance on assessments.<\/p>\n

And, even still, I don\u2019t always feel like every single assessment will give me valuable information about my students. I have, in the past, had meetings\u00a0with parents to\u00a0talk about opting their kids out of a test\u00a0if it didn\u2019t\u00a0really prove to be beneficial.<\/p>\n

But these past two weeks, our kids have been trekking away at the NWEA \u2013 an adaptive assessment that they\u00a0take on the computer.\u00a0All of our students\u00a0take the NWEA. And, because it adapts to each student\u2019s learning level, questions are accessible for\u00a0everyone.<\/p>\n

This is one assessment I feel accurately gauges my student\u2019s growth. It measures growth of our kiddos over time \u2013 regardless of if they are above, on or below grade level.<\/p>\n

\"carpet\"And, man, did our kids grow.<\/p>\n

Grow isn\u2019t the right verb.<\/p>\n

Soar, maybe?<\/p>\n

Anyway, moral of the story:\u00a0there\u2019s something to be said about numbers.<\/span>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Not only does the\u00a0data\u00a0inform our instructional practices, but it allows our families to see that our kids are actually growing. Soaring. Learning.<\/p>\n

And, most\u00a0importantly, I\u2019ve seen how it motivates our kids when they see\u00a0their progress over time. That investment is something that I\u00a0can\u2019t directly teach them. That investment in their learning is a result of seeing growth over time. When they\u00a0see positive results,\u00a0they\u2019re\u00a0naturally going to want to see more.<\/p>\n

And they did.<\/p>\n

They grew.<\/p>\n

They soared.<\/p>\n

So, naturally, they want to fly just a little higher.<\/p>\n
