For the first time she can remember, the 10-year-old watched a president and vice president-elect speak.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">And for the first time in the nation&#8217;s history,\u00a0<a class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tennessean.com\/story\/news\/politics\/elections\/2020\/11\/07\/kamala-harris-first-female-vice-president-first-woman-vp-color\/6168492002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-t-l=\"|inline|intext|n\/a\">that vice president-elect is a woman<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">&#8220;It was so exciting because I had never ever seen in my life a president and a vice president talk,&#8221; Eliza said. &#8220;I think they are going to make a great country for four years We should have women\u00a0in any (position)\u00a0because women can do what men can do \u2014 vice president, president. Anything we can think of that a boy can do, a girl can do too.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Eliza wasn&#8217;t the only little girl in Nashville \u2014 or across the country \u2014 staying up late the night President-Elect Joe Biden and Vice President-Elect Kamala Harris delivered their victory\u00a0speeches after winning the 2020 presidential election.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Across town, London Dollar, 2, gazed at the television screen\u00a0<a class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tennessean.com\/story\/news\/politics\/elections\/2020\/11\/07\/kamala-harris-wears-white-nod-suffragettes-women-before-her\/6210019002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-t-l=\"|inline|intext|n\/a\">while Harris spoke from Wilmington, Delaware<\/a>. London\u00a0watched a woman who looked a lot like her accept one of the highest positions of power in the free world.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">&#8220;We try to be intentional\u00a0about making sure she gets to see people who look like her often\u00a0in books, on\u00a0television.\u00a0That night it was a\u00a0moment of her seeing\u00a0the first vice president woman, first vice president Black woman. She was hyped because we were hyped,&#8221;\u00a0Kinita Dollar said of her daughter. &#8220;It\u00a0sounds cliche, but representation really matters.&#8221;<\/p>\n<aside class=\"gnt_m gnt_x gnt_x__lbl gnt_x__al\" aria-label=\"advertisement\"><\/aside>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Despite President Donald Trump&#8217;s unwillingness to concede to Biden and Harris, despite the weeks that remain before the Electoral College formally meets,\u00a0<a class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tennessean.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2020\/11\/10\/joe-biden-not-recognized-president-elect-tennessee-gov-bill-lee\/6232632002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-t-l=\"|inline|intext|n\/a\">despite ongoing divisiveness that surrounds this election<\/a>, millions of young women and girls are celebrating Harris&#8217;s historical achievement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">During\u00a0<a class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tennessean.com\/story\/money\/2020\/11\/11\/kamala-harris-effect-black-women-corporate-america\/6227172002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-t-l=\"|inline|intext|n\/a\">her victory speech on Nov. 7<\/a>, the California senator \u2014 and now the\u00a0first\u00a0woman, first Black person and first person of South Asian descent\u00a0to be elected to the nation&#8217;s second-highest office in\u00a0244 years \u2014 sent a message to women and girls, especially those of color.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cWhile I may be the first woman in this office, I will not be the last,\u201d Harris said. \u201cBecause every little girl watching tonight sees that this is a country of possibilities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Adrianne Wright, a multi-racial Nashville woman and mother of a young daughter, said she is reminded of her race every single day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">&#8220;When I was a young girl growing up in predominantly white neighborhoods, I struggled to find the spaces where I belonged, sometimes even wondering if I belonged at all,&#8221; Wright said in an email. &#8220;Harris being elected is an exceptional moment in our country. It gives me hope, and it gives me breath. Yes, we have a long way to go to fight gender equality, but let us not ignore this significant truth: to be a young girl in this country, and see yourself reflected in leadership is a true message that you belong and that our country is full of possibilities.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Harris&#8217; election is a celebratory moment for many, but the &#8220;why&#8221; of its\u00a0significance\u00a0can be a tough subject to unpack for both parents and teachers alike.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Victoria Banks Petrelli said her 5-year-old daughter Alexa was surprised that a woman had never been &#8220;in charge&#8221; before.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">&#8220;I let both of my daughters stay up past their bedtimes to watch Kamala\u2019s speech. I talked to them about how this is the first time a woman has been vice president, and about how hopefully in their lifetimes they will see a woman president too,&#8221; Petrelli said. &#8220;My daughter was really surprised to hear that there had never been a woman &#8216;in charge&#8217; before. She asked me why. That\u2019s a hard question to unpack for your child, who sees things as they should be and not how they are.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">And though teachers often use current elections as real-life connections to topics like the electoral process or the Constitution, it can also be a bit of a balancing act when politics are involved.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Sometimes parents and teachers also don&#8217;t realize what young children are seeing and hearing, or the questions they have.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">&#8220;They have\u00a0all these questions and a lot of\u00a0times, we think our kids aren&#8217;t ready for this conversation but they are,&#8221; said James Cross, a teacher at Rocketship Nashville Northeast Elementary. &#8220;They hear things and they don&#8217;t always know who to ask to get more information about it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure class=\"gnt_em gnt_em_img\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gannett-cdn.com\/presto\/2020\/11\/17\/PNAS\/09d80bea-2148-424f-a51a-fe10e5131379-Rocketship_teacher-03.jpg?width=660&amp;height=452&amp;fit=crop&amp;format=pjpg&amp;auto=webp\" alt=\"James Cross, Rocketship Nashville Northeast Elementary teacher, teaches reading to his students in Nashville, Tenn. Tuesday, Nov. 17, 2020. \" data-c-credit=\"Larry McCormack \/ The Tennessean\"><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Cross, who teaches\u00a0fourth grade at the Nashville charter school, used\u00a0the election to connect\u00a0to a unit he&#8217;s been teaching about the U.S. Constitution and several of its amendments\u00a0since mid-October.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Cross and his students explored the question, &#8220;Who was\u00a0the Constitution written for and inclusive of and who was left out or ignored?&#8221;<\/p>\n<aside id=\"gnt_atomsnc\" class=\"gnt_em gnt_em_anc\" data-g-r=\"lazy\" data-gl-method=\"loadAnc\" aria-label=\"Newsletter signup form\"><\/aside>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">The students not only discussed the historical significance of\u00a0Harris&#8217; election but also studied the women&#8217;s suffrage movement and\u00a0<a class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tennessean.com\/in-depth\/news\/womenofthecentury\/2020\/02\/09\/tennessee-womens-right-vote-suffrage\/2798754001\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-t-l=\"|inline|intext|n\/a\">Tennessee&#8217;s role in the ratification of the 19th Amendment<\/a>\u00a0a century ago.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Cross was surprised, not by the initial reaction his students to Harris, but by how quickly they asked deeper questions, like what does Harris&#8217; position of power mean and when might they see a woman elected president.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">&#8220;A lot of them dived\u00a0right into the &#8216;whys.&#8217; It plays into the conversations we had been having in class:\u00a0Why has it taken so long to have a woman in this position?\u00a0What is going to happen in the future? Are we going to have another vice president like her in the future? Will we ever have a female president?&#8221; Cross said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"gnt_em_t gnt_em_t__hb\" data-c-et=\"Vice President-elect Kamala Harris: A look at her political career\" aria-label=\"Sen. Kamala Harris ran to unseat President Donald Trump in the 2020 election. She became the first woman, first African American, first Asian American vice president.\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">It&#8217;s important for his students \u2014 who are mostly Black or Latino \u2014 see people like them not only in the school&#8217;s history curriculum but\u00a0<a class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tennessean.com\/story\/news\/politics\/elections\/2020\/08\/22\/kamala-harris-background-resonates-trailblazing-women-color\/3387348001\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-t-l=\"|inline|intext|n\/a\">in positions of power in everyday life<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">&#8220;It&#8217;s really, really important for all kids to see that,&#8221; Cross said. &#8220;Our principal talks a lot about how kids need access to windows and mirrors. It&#8217;s important to give our students access to that and to see those images and reflections of themselves so they can understand that there are all sorts of people from different backgrounds who are in these positions and thriving.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Dollar agrees. She and her husband are also educators for Metro Nashville Public Schools.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">When students are able to see someone who looks like them \u2014 or different from them \u2014 in places of power or look up to someone making history today,\u00a0it&#8217;s easier for them to have &#8220;softer hearts toward others,&#8221; Dollar\u00a0said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">&#8220;I think we&#8217;ve just grazed the place that we have this moment, that we have a woman in one of the highest levels of office in our country,&#8221; Dollar said. &#8220;The subtle things that hit you at\u00a0that\u00a0moment. &#8230;We don&#8217;t think about women as being the decision-makers for what happens in wars and this woman now gets to make decisions that affect everyone.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">For young girls, like her daughter, &#8220;they now have a woman of color that they can watch and see and mold themselves after,&#8221; Dollar said. &#8220;The ceiling has been shattered for her, there are no more limits.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Eliza, whose\u00a0<a class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tennessean.com\/story\/news\/education\/2014\/11\/26\/pulitzer-winner-david-maraniss-teach-vanderbilt\/19534147\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-t-l=\"|inline|intext|n\/a\">journalist grandfather David Maraniss won a\u00a0Pulitzer Prize in 1993<\/a>\u00a0for his coverage in The Washington Post of\u00a0Bill Clinton&#8217;s candidacy, was inspired throughout the Biden and Harris\u00a0campaign.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">She and little brother Charlie, 7, held signs outside polling stations and helped their parents reach out to potential voters. As the days dragged on after Election Day, she even kept track of how many electoral votes Biden and President Donald Trump each received and updated her classmates.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">&#8220;During the election, I\u00a0had a tab open and I\u00a0kept looking back every day like &#8216;Oh my gosh, (Biden)\u00a0is getting so much closer&#8217; and I kept on giving updates to my friends on Google Hangouts,&#8221; Eliza said. &#8220;I\u00a0so anxious and scared when Pennsylvania had 99% reporting and he needed\u00a020 votes!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">When she grows up, Eliza isn&#8217;t sure she wants to be president, even if Harris has set such a precedent. Instead, she is thinking about working at her school and encouraging the next generation of students to pursue their dreams.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">&#8220;I have some\u00a0advice for any girls who are out there, just believe what you believe, and\u00a0when you grow up, always stand up for yourself and say to anyone, &#8216;I can do anything a boy can do, women can do whatever a boy can do too,'&#8221; Eliza said. &#8220;Even if some girls might be African-American, they can say to anyone, &#8216;Even if\u00a0I&#8217;m African-American, I\u00a0can stand up for myself, I can be like Kamala Harris.'&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\"><em>Meghan Mangrum covers education in Nashville for the USA TODAY NETWORK \u2014\u00a0Tennessee.
