\u201cOn the playground, Howard\u2019s teammates try to help him,\u201d she reads, following each word carefully with her fingertip. \u201cBoink! But Howard doesn\u2019t listen.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s only the second day at Rocketship Redwood City Prep, but Ms. Berry\u2019s Rocketeers are enthralled by <\/span>Howard B. Wigglebottom Learns to Listen<\/span><\/i>. The five-year-olds, clad in purple, are far more attentive than the book\u2019s distracted protagonist.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ms. Berry reads a story about Howard, a bunny who sometimes struggles to listen at school.<\/p><\/div>\n

“I\u2019ve dreamed of being a teacher since I could talk. I was born in Redwood City and have grown up around educators,” says Lauren Berry. After teaching at Alma Academy for the last two years, Berry\u00a0joined Redwood City Prep’s founding team last spring.<\/p>\n

“My two aunts have both taught in Redwood City and in 1957 my grandparents moved here to found a school.\u00a0I can\u2019t help but pinch myself as I call my grandparents and share my experience as a founding teacher.”<\/p>\n

Redwood City Prep is Rocketship\u2019s tenth Bay Area school and the first in Redwood City. After nearly three years of diligent advocacy and community organizing<\/a> by Redwood City parents who demanded better school options for their community, <\/span>three hundred students and parents have joined the Rocketship family this week.<\/span><\/p>\n

In June, the Redwood City School Board, responding to parent voice, unanimously approved<\/a> charter petitions for both Rocketship and KIPP to open schools in the 2014 – 15 school\u00a0year. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAt her old school, my eldest daughter just wasn\u2019t learning,\u201d Alvertina Ortega explained to me after school on Tuesday. We talked while she waited for a get-to-know-you meeting with Ms. Berry.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI want both my kids to keep learning after high school in a university. Sometimes kids lose interest and don\u2019t even finish high school. I want better than that for my daughters.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

\"drawing<\/a>Ortega is the mother of two new Rocketeers, her five-year-old Yareli and eight-year-old Carina. She believes Rocketship will instill <\/span>a love of learning<\/span><\/a> that will set her girls up for academic success in the long term. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI am already more involved at this school. I feel more important as a parent now. The teachers here really communicate with me,\u201d she said with a smile. <\/span><\/p>\n

This year, Redwood City Prep\u2019s facilities are unique because there are\u00a0classrooms spread across two campuses: Hoover and Taft Elementary Schools. It\u2019s a co-facility<\/a>, so Rocketeers currently share the space with their peers at Hoover and Taft. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a new challenge for Rocketship, but we weren\u2019t going to lower the bar,\u201d says Casey Rowe, a long-time Rocketeer and the founding principal of Redwood City Prep. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cBecause of our amazing teachers and families \u2013 who have all worked really hard \u2013 this feels like any other Rocketship school. It will be great when we have our own facility, but a building is not what makes a school great. Regardless of space, we\u2019ll deliver for our kids and families.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
