Building strong parent-teacher connections is key to student success. We were able to sit down with Mrs. Aqeel, a dedicated educator at Rocketship Dream Community Prep, to learn about three simple ways she connects with parents every week. From quick check-ins to sharing helpful resources and fostering parent involvement, she shares how these small, consistent efforts make a big difference.<\/p>\n

1. Weekly Check-Ins: Keeping Communication Open<\/b><\/h2>\n

Q: How do you stay in touch with parents every week?<\/b><\/p>\n

“At Dream, we use different communication platforms like Dojo, ParentSquare, and email, but my personal favorite is texting. Calls are tough to answer during school hours, and I don\u2019t want to miss any important messages that come through. Most of my parents reach out after hours, once they\u2019ve had time to process their child\u2019s day.”<\/p>\n

Q: Do you have a strategy for making communication easy and effective?<\/b><\/p>\n

“At the start of each school year, I share my direct phone number with parents for emergencies. That small gesture builds trust right away. If they know they can reach me when needed, they feel more connected to the classroom.”<\/p>\n

Q: Can you share an example of when a simple check-in made a big impact?<\/b><\/p>\n

“Early in the year, a mother reached out about a bullying concern. Her son had transferred to Dream because of past experiences, and she was worried it was happening again. I reassured her that I\u2019d look into it right away. After investigating, I confirmed the issue and took immediate action\u2014adjusting seating arrangements, addressing the behavior, and keeping parents updated. Thanks to open communication, we prevented losing a valuable family. Now, the two students involved? They\u2019re in the same book club and actually enjoy each other\u2019s company!”<\/p>\n

“I provide weekly homework packets and upload them to Dojo, so parents always have access. I also make sure to share examples, helpful video links, and even offer Zoom calls when needed. This way, parents don\u2019t feel lost when their child comes home with questions.”<\/p>\n

Q: Do parents engage with the resources you share?<\/b><\/p>\n

“Yes! Every parent communicates differently, so I adjust to their preferences. Some parents love Dojo, others prefer texting, and a few will just call for quick questions\u2014like checking the dress code for an event. No matter how they reach out, my goal is to make sure they feel supported and involved.”<\/p>\n

3. Encouraging Parent Involvement: Creating a Real Community<\/b><\/h2>\n

Q: What are some fun ways you involve parents in school activities?<\/b><\/p>\n

“I believe parents are more engaged when they see the human side of teachers. My family is very active in after-school activities, and I invite parents to join in whenever possible. Whether it\u2019s story time at the library, hiking, kickball at the park, or cookouts, these moments create real connections outside the classroom.”<\/p>\n

“Absolutely! When parents feel part of the school community, they\u2019re more invested in their child\u2019s education. I can\u2019t name just one parent who has made an impact because so many have. But I have to give a special shoutout to the Lindemyer family for their incredible volunteerism\u2014not just for our class, but for anyone who needs help. They truly embody what community is all about.”<\/p>\n
