For a five\u2011year\u2011old, the first day of school can feel enormous: new faces, new routines, a world they\u2019re stepping into for the very first time. At Rocketship, belonging begins before that moment. In the days leading up to the school year, new Rocketeers meet their teachers, explore their classrooms, and start forming the relationships that make a place feel familiar.<\/p>\n

Across the network, this early belonging takes two forms: Kinder Camp<\/strong>, where our youngest Rocketeers learn the rhythms of school before the year begins, and home visits<\/strong>, where educators meet families in the places where Rocketeers feel most themselves. Together, these traditions help students walk through the door on Day One with confidence and help families feel known from the start.<\/p>\n

Welcoming Our Youngest Rocketeers<\/strong><\/h2>\n

\"\"At Rocketship United Academy in Nashville, Kinder Camp unfolds before school officially starts. Staff greet incoming kindergarteners in the parking lot, then walk with them inside to meet teachers and explore classrooms. Over two half\u2011days, our newest Rocketeers practice routines, learn the school\u2019s mission, and join Launch, Rocketship\u2019s morning gathering filled with music and movement.<\/p>\n

Before camp begins, families receive a Kinder Box with small essentials for the transition to elementary school. For Principal Ben Smith, it\u2019s a way to honor the trust families place in the school.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe know that every time they send their child to our school, it\u2019s a gift for us,\u201d Smith said. \u201cWe want to just give a small token of our appreciation. We love to have them here.\u201d<\/p>\n

As camp unfolds, teachers begin discovering the Rocketeers behind the names on their rosters: who leaps into dancing, who watches first, who asks questions, who warms slowly. These small moments help educators begin living Rocketship’s Personalized Learning pillar<\/span><\/strong>, shaping instruction around the unique ways Rocketeers engage. Throughout the day, families receive photos and updates, glimpses into these first moments of connection.<\/p>\n

Smith hopes that familiarity builds assurance when the year begins. \u201cWe want our kids to be excited. We want them to feel confident that they can start the year right,” he said.<\/p>\n

Building Relationships at Home<\/strong><\/h2>\n

\"\"Home visits let educators meet Rocketeers in the spaces that shape them. In living rooms and kitchens, they begin to understand the histories and hopes each Rocketeer carries into school. These conversations are a lived expression of Rocketship\u2019s Parent Power pillar<\/span><\/strong>, rooted in the belief that families are their Rocketeers\u2019 first teachers and strongest advocates.<\/p>\n

For some educators, these early moments become ones they never forget, like one visit from Iris Armenta\u2019s first year at Rocketship Rising Stars in California.<\/p>\n

She was new to the school, and the family was new to Rocketship. She arrived nervous, unsure of what the moment would hold. The family welcomed her with a home\u2011cooked meal of hominy. As they talked, they shared not only stories about their Rocketeer but the hopes they carried for their family\u2019s future.<\/p>\n

\u201cI felt like I became part of their family while I was there,\u201d Iris said. \u201cThey weren\u2019t just sharing about their student. They were sharing what mattered most to them.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rocketeers bring those histories, cultures, hopes, and aspirations with them each day. Hearing directly from families helps educators understand those experiences and support students with deeper care.<\/p>\n

Patty Salgado knows the experience from both sides. Before becoming a Rocketship educator, she was a Rocketship parent. When her daughter\u2019s teacher visited their home, she asked about the whole family.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt felt different,\u201d Patty said. \u201cIt broke down barriers and showed me we were united from the very beginning.\u201d<\/p>\n

Belonging Before Day One<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Kinder Camp and home visits are two uniquely Rocketship traditions that help a sense of belonging<\/strong> take root before the new school year begins. By the time the first day arrives, our Rocketeers carry a sense of familiarity into the building, a small but steady confidence that grows from being known.<\/p>\n
