 {"id":2680,"date":"2015-10-12T06:00:45","date_gmt":"2015-10-12T13:00:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.rsed.org\/?p=2680"},"modified":"2017-12-13T00:36:40","modified_gmt":"2017-12-13T00:36:40","slug":"five-ways-for-school-leaders-to-support-teachers-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rocketshipschools.org\/en\/latest-news\/blog\/five-ways-for-school-leaders-to-support-teachers-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Five Ways for School Leaders to Support Teachers"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"drop-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"drop-image\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Personalized learning and data-driven instruction have both become persistent in education dialogue, and I hear about them all the time. \u00a0At Rocketship, we deeply believe that every child\u2019s education has to be personalized; a commitment to using data and assessments to individualize every child\u2019s education, having the flexibility to convene groups of different sizes depending on the lesson, and a purposeful use of technology to enhance student learning and support classroom instruction is a large part of what makes our schools transformative.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>If we believe that personalized learning is the best thing for our children, there\u2019s no reason we shouldn\u2019t be approaching all of our professional development for our staffs in the same vein.\u00a0 Convening groups of different sizes based on needs, committing to coaching practices that we know to be skill-building in nature, and using data to constantly gauge growth and development are all just as critical with our teachers as they are with our children.<\/p>\n<p>There are many variables at the teacher level that affect student achievement: experience level, past results, education, maturity, work ethic, etc.\u00a0 But, to me, there\u2019s only one that I can truly control: the amount and kind of development and support they get. Building systems and structures for truly personalized teacher development is critical if our students are going to get what they need to be successful.<\/p>\n<p>Here are five core ideas that drive our approach to personalized support for our teachers:<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #006b6e;\"><strong>1. Cultivate the desire to grow<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Build comprehensive visions of excellence and use it as a coaching tool to ensure teachers see a pathway in their development. At Rocketship, we use very-detailed rubrics that we both create and constantly edit as our vision of instruction evolves. Take the time to discuss these rubrics with your teachers and understand how the rubric fits in the teacher\u2019s idea of excellence.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #006b6e;\">2.\u00a0 Celebrate small wins\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_2683\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rocketshipschools.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/rocketship-teacher-coaching.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2683\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2683\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rocketshipschools.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/rocketship-teacher-coaching.jpg?w=300\" alt=\"School leaders can support teachers in being their best for kids through deliberate and planned coaching. \" width=\"300\" height=\"197\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rocketshipschools.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/rocketship-teacher-coaching.jpg 1045w, https:\/\/www.rocketshipschools.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/rocketship-teacher-coaching-300x197.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.rocketshipschools.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/rocketship-teacher-coaching-768x504.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.rocketshipschools.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/rocketship-teacher-coaching-1024x672.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2683\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">School leaders can support teachers in being their best for kids through deliberate and planned coaching.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>We celebrate our students all the time. Teachers should be celebrated too. Having high expectations is a double-edged sword: it is both really important for all members of a community and makes authentic celebration of success very challenging.<\/p>\n<p>Be comfortable celebrating growth in a skill or progress towards a big goal, even if that goal is far from being met.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #006b6e;\">3.\u00a0 Delineate between ICEs &amp; NICEs<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>ICE, or an intensive coaching experience, and should something that is skill-building in nature.\u00a0 Real-time coaching, co-planning with a teacher, and analyzing formative assessment data with a teacher are all ICEs in my coaching.\u00a0 NICEs (Not ICEs), for us, are things like lesson-plan feedback and modeling: they\u2019re nice to do, but they aren\u2019t by nature skill-building, so they can\u2019t be a huge part of our coaching processes.<\/p>\n<h2><strong><span style=\"color: #006b6e;\">4.\u00a0 Commit to a core group of ICEs as a leadership team<\/span>\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>If we are going to develop as instructional coaches, we as school leaders have to collaborate deeply.\u00a0 In our schools, we choose a small number of ICEs that match our school\u2019s needs and look to put them into practice together.\u00a0 By coaching together, we are likely to both grow more as coaches and grow more quickly, both of which are going to have a huge impact on student achievement.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #006b6e;\">5.\u00a0 Make every PD minute matter<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>We value small-group collaborative learning much more than we do whole group PD, so you see the majority of our PD time going towards the former.\u00a0\u00a0 If we want to build a staff culture where constant learning and collaboration are at the core, this has to be represented in how we structure our professional development and support structures.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Adam is the Vice President of Personalized Learning and Achievement. Adam was the founding Principal of Rocketship&#8217;s first school in Nashville, which is also his hometown. Adam\u00a0attended college at Middlebury in Vermont before getting a Masters from Vanderbilt in elementary education. After teaching for many years in Nashville, Adam joined Rocketship as a teacher in 2009 and has since been the Principal of three Rocketship schools, Los Suenos,\u00a0Mosaic, and Nashville Northeast. When he&#8217;s not encouraging people to utilize the first third of VICTOR, he spends his time trail running and collecting folk
