month of April is Autism Awareness Month, dedicated to educating the public about autism and issues within the autism community.\u00a0 Currently, approximately one in 68 children is diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder<strong><span style=\"color: #339966;\">*<\/span><\/strong>.\u00a0 We educate children with ASD in every one of our Rocketship schools, and this month we are excited to share a selection of our favorite resources for teachers and families.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The basics:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/icdd.idaho.gov\/pdf\/parent_league\/TenThingsEveryChild.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ten Things Every Child with Autism Wishes You Knew <\/a><\/p>\n<p>Autism is a complex disorder but for purposes of this article, we can distill its characteristics into four fundamental areas: sensory processing challenges, speech\/language delays and impairments, social interaction skills and whole child\/self-esteem issues. \u00a0And though these four elements may be common to many children, keep in mind that Autism is a spectrum disorder (ASD) meaning no two children with Autism will be completely alike.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>Resources for Educators<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<h5><a href=\"http:\/\/behaviordoctor.org\/?page_id=499\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Behavior Doctor (Autism Pages)<br \/>\n<\/a><em>for educators new to working w\/ students on the spectrum<\/em><\/h5>\n<p>The Behavior Doctor is an amazing collection of resources to support behavior and positive social-emotional functioning in general, and the Autism pages are no exception.\u00a0 This page provides a great list of considerations for educators working with students on the spectrum, as well as resources and additional references.<\/p>\n<h5><a href=\"https:\/\/autismpdc.fpg.unc.edu\/national-professional-development-center-autism-spectrum-disorder\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The National Professional Development Center on Autism Spectrum Disorders<br \/>\n<\/a><em>for teachers looking for evidence-based practices<\/em><\/h5>\n<p>The National Professional Development Center has an array of resources to support educators working with students with ASD, one of the most useful of which is their collection of \u201cEvidence-Based Practices for Children and Youth with ASD\u201d briefs.\u00a0 This includes 24 briefs, each including a summary of the research base, and overview of the practice, the steps for implementation, and an implementation fidelity checklist.<\/p>\n<h4><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thewatsoninstitute.org\/teacher-resources2.jsp?pageId=2161392240601226415747290\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Watson Institute<br \/>\n<\/a><em>for teachers who are trying to create social stories<\/em><\/h4>\n<p>Social stories are an evidence-based intervention used to teach individuals with social differences how to learn and follow common routines and social norms.\u00a0 The Watson Institute has a wide range of behavior stories available for free, which can be used as is or as a template that can be adapted to meet any educator\u2019s or family\u2019s needs.<\/p>\n<h5><a href=\"http:\/\/teacch.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">University of North Carolina\u2019s TEACCH Autism Program<br \/>\n<\/a><em>for teachers in need of visual resources<\/em><\/h5>\n<p>TEACCH developed the intervention approach called \u201cStructured TEACCHing\u201d, which is based on understanding the learning characteristics of individuals with autism and the use of visual supports to promote meaning and independence.\u00a0 Resources, including books, DVDs, and teaching materials are available on the <a href=\"http:\/\/teacch.com\/resources\">TEACCH Resource Page<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h5><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sccoe.org\/depts\/library\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Santa Clara County Office of Education Learning Multimedia Center<br \/>\n<\/a><em>a source for inexpensive materials<\/em><\/h5>\n<p>SCCOE\u2019s Learning Multimedia Center contains a wide selection of resources for educators, including many resources to support educators working with students on the Autism spectrum.\u00a0 Of particular note is the \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sccoe.org\/depts\/library\/Pages\/Resource-Center.aspx\">Make \u2018n\u2019 Take Center<\/a>,\u201d where, for a nominal fee, teachers can reproduce TEACCH materials for use with students on the spectrum.<\/p>\n<h5><a href=\"https:\/\/teach.com\/online-ed\/psychology-degrees\/online-masters-applied-behavior-analysis\/aba-digital-autism-resources\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Digital Resources for Children with Autism<\/a><\/h5>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/teach.com\/online-ed\/psychology-degrees\/online-masters-applied-behavior-analysis\/aba-digital-autism-resources\/\">Helpful links<\/a> for teachers and parents.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>Resources for Families<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<h5><a href=\"http:\/\/www.php.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Parents Helping Parents<br \/>\n<\/a><em>for parents looking for community support (in San Jose)<\/em><\/h5>\n<p>Parents Helping Parents Center is located in San Jose and helps families who have children of any age with special needs. This is due to the routinized nature of the school day and the fact that many children living with Autism are unable to maintain the effort they need to function successfully at school when they return home. Time spent making visual schedules now will support independent functioning while decreasing anxiety and difficult behaviors. Consider creating visual schedules for a morning routine, after school\/nighttime routine, and community outings.<\/p>\n<h5><a href=\"http:\/\/thechaosandtheclutter.com\/archives\/3325\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Our Best Sensory Bins<br \/>\n<\/a><em>for parents looking for inexpensive sensory bin ideas<\/em><\/h5>\n<p>Sensory bins are a wonderful tool for use for children with Autism that are experiencing sensory challenges and are often used to facilitate communication and sustained attention. Sensory bins can be used at home or can even be created to be portable to help meet the individual stimulation needs and challenges that arise for many children with Autism.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #339966;\"><strong>*<\/strong><\/span>Source:\u00a0Center for Disease Control and Prevention<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;<br \/>\n<em>Caitlin Gallagher is one of Rocketship&#8217;s talented\u00a0School Psychologist.
