Solomon appears in a bright orange sweater and a black, San Jose State graduation stole with kente patterns. She seamlessly transitions kids into their first project of the day, creating a kente cloth square with symmetrical lines and patterns of their choice. Holding her stole high in the air, Solomon points out the patterns as an exemplar.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think art and all the enrichment play a huge role,\u201d she explained to me before class. \u201cIt\u2019s great to strengthen the creative sides of the brain. And I try to shout out how there\u2019s lots of opportunities for artists in college.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Before coming to Rocketship this fall, Solomon had a background in after school programming and summer camp. She also volunteered at Rocketship. When she applied to for a full time position, she looked at both tutor\u00a0and enrichment center coordinator positions and ultimately decided an ECC position focused on art was perfect for her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI like art, and I want to know more about it. The comforting thing is I get taught through\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/t.e2ma.net\/click\/4p5jq\/kqk8kf\/opihzj\">Art House Kids<\/a>, and then I get to teach key things to the kids with projects about art around the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"225\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rocketshipschools.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/art1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-225\" class=\"wp-image-225 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rocketshipschools.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/art1.png?w=300\" alt=\"Ms. Solomon points out an interesting pattern on a student's kente square.\" width=\"300\" height=\"198\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-225\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ms. Solomon points out an interesting pattern on a student&#8217;s kente square.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Art teachers working with external organizations is a common thread throughout the Rocketship network. Mosaic Elementary\u00a0also works with Art House Kids, while Brilliant Minds, Mateo Sheedy, Los\u00a0Sue\u00f1os\u00a0and Southside Community Prep\u00a0all started working with a group call\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/t.e2ma.net\/click\/4p5jq\/kqk8kf\/4hjhzj\">Art in Action<\/a>\u00a0this year to get resources, curriculum and support for art. The art programs at S\u00ed Se Puede Academy\u00a0and Spark\u00a0are developed by the art teachers with support from their coaches.<\/p>\n<p>Ten minutes north of Alma, Mrs. Cordero leads a third grade art class to create blueprints of various government buildings at Discovery Prep. She\u2019s talking with one student who quickly drew the white house free hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m done!\u201d he says, holding\u00a0his paper high in the air. She looks to him and asks if he thinks the building could stay standing without the walls being measured perfectly. He decides it wouldn\u2019t and begins again on a fresh piece of paper, this time with ruler in hand.<\/p>\n<p>This current unit aligns with math and social studies standards her students are learning about in their core classes.<\/p>\n<p>Recently, third graders finished a project where they created eagles in front of the American flag as part of a unit on symbolism. A bright and eager Rocketeer named Vy takes me in the hall to show me her picture of an eagle in front of the American flag.<\/p>\n<div id=\"30\" style=\"width: 208px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/rocketshiped.files.wordpress.com\/2014\/02\/vy-e1394055296844.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-30\" class=\"wp-image-30 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/rocketshiped.files.wordpress.com\/2014\/02\/vy-e1394055296844.png?w=198\" alt=\"Third grade Rocketeer, Vye, points to her American Eagle art project.\" width=\"198\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-30\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Vy, a 3rd grade Rocketeer, proudly shows off her Eagle illustration.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cWe looked at pictures of people who were in a war and they woke up and eagles were flying around,\u201d she tells me while stretching to point to her project on the a wall near the school\u2019s entrance. \u201cThe eagle and the American flag are symbols of freedom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cordero has been teaching art at Discovery Prep\u00a0for three years and, with a BA in Spatial Art and experience teaching in the both the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/t.e2ma.net\/click\/4p5jq\/kqk8kf\/kakhzj\">San Jose<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/t.e2ma.net\/click\/4p5jq\/kqk8kf\/02khzj\">Triton Museums of Art<\/a>, she\u2019s eager to bring every student art experiences of their own.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think art is a huge asset to what Rocketship can do,\u201d she told me after school. \u201cOur students need that extra visual learning. I think art is more than just craft \u2013 it\u2019s a part of life \u2013 it\u2019s in everything. I think if we have the curriculum that supports what they\u2019re learning in other core subjects, it will just grow their ability to grasp concepts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She coordinates with each teacher to create her art lessons, which differ for each class.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cArt has become a consistent platform for all students to access and engage with our social studies and science curriculum in a very hands on way. I tried to step away and do display artistry for a while but I went back to teaching. I\u2019m a sucker for the kids. I felt like by coming to Rocketship\u00a0full time, I could grow the program,\u201d says Cordero.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u2014<\/p>\n<p><em>Kevin Bronk works on the Rocketship Network Support Team and is the editor of Beyond.
