Si queremos que nuestros hijos sean lectores de por vida, nosotros, como padres, debemos leerles, con ellos y a su alrededor. \u00bfPor qu\u00e9 no llevar este enfoque al aula? Para ayudar a los Rocketeers a amar la lectura, muchos padres de Rocketship, incluidos nosotros, participamos en el programa Los Dichos a trav\u00e9s de Proyecto Cornerstone<\/a>, una iniciativa de la YMCA del Valle de Silicio<\/a>. El programa Los Dichos ayuda a los padres, especialmente a aquellos que hablan espa\u00f1ol como su idioma principal, a involucrarse en la educaci\u00f3n de sus hijos e inculcar una identidad cultural positiva. Comenzamos tomando un curso introductorio sobre activos de desarrollo impartido por personal de Project Cornerstone. Nos reunimos mensualmente como grupo para revisar y discutir planes de lecciones y actividades antes de ir al aula.<\/p>\n

The books we read\u00a0are bilingual and teach students about the Latino culture and values. Each one\u00a0has a dicho<\/em>, or saying, that reflects the story. After reading the bilingual book to the class, we lead activities and discussion on various topics such as family pride, peaceful conflict resolution and other values. By leading a lesson in Spanish in the classroom, Latino students can see how important their culture is and other students can learn about the Latino culture and learn to respect the values. Being part of Los Dichos program has helped many parents realize the importance of being involved in our children’s education, even if we do not speak English.<\/p>\n

When we signed up to volunteer, we thought we were just going to read any book. But instead, we received training and lesson plans to help us read to the students effectively.<\/p>\n

Segundo, al impartir una lecci\u00f3n en espa\u00f1ol, los padres demuestran en el aula que su idioma y cultura son valorados. Esto ayuda a construir una identidad cultural positiva para sus hijos y sus compa\u00f1eros latinos. Tercero, todos los estudiantes de la clase aprenden la misma lecci\u00f3n positiva y desarrollan un mayor aprecio y respeto por la cultura latina; promoviendo la competencia cultural y la tolerancia en toda la comunidad escolar\u00bb.<\/p>\n

Una vez al mes, durante una hora, somos maestros en el aula de nuestros hijos, y a nuestros hijos les encanta. Lety naci\u00f3 y creci\u00f3 en East San Jose, donde vive con sus tres hijos y su esposo. Su hija mayor es tutora de ILS en Rocketship Fuerza Community Prep; su hija menor es estudiante all\u00ed.
