Often these students can\u00a0be successful in a\u00a0general education classroom with a few accommodations in place. I\u2019ve used all of these accommodations in my own resource classroom and have helped general education teachers implement them in their own classrooms, too.<br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The key to providing successful accommodations is having clear expectations from the very start. It\u2019s important not to use these accommodations to single out students in a negative way. I never use any as punishments, and I encourage students to let me know when they need them. Read on for seven accommodations for students with ADHD.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #006b6e;\"><strong>1. Give them something to hold!\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>This is one of the most basic accommodations you can provide, but it goes a long way with many fidgety students. My favorite \u201cfidgets\u201d are Yuk-E-Balls (super durable and easy to clean), but there are tons of less expensive options out there, like bean bags or stress balls. Just make sure you set clear expectations about using the fidget, such as no throwing.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2757\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rocketshipschools.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/rocketship-kimochis.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2757\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2757\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rocketshipschools.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/rocketship-kimochis.jpg?w=300\" alt=\"Giving students something to hold can help them maintain focus. \" width=\"300\" height=\"197\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rocketshipschools.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/rocketship-kimochis.jpg 1033w, https:\/\/www.rocketshipschools.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/rocketship-kimochis-300x197.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.rocketshipschools.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/rocketship-kimochis-768x506.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.rocketshipschools.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/rocketship-kimochis-1024x674.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2757\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Giving students something to hold can help them maintain focus.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #006b6e;\"><strong>2.\u00a0<b>Assign them the job of class timer.<\/b>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>A class or activity can seem like it is going on forever to a student with ADHD, so a concrete reminder of the amount of time left can be helpful. Your assigned timer can use a handheld timer to clock everything from independent work time to bathroom breaks. This also helps keep kids\u00a0busy and feeling helpful.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #006b6e;\"><strong>3.\u00a0<b>Use tape to create clear boundaries<\/b>.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>If your students sit at shared tables, try using masking tape to divide up the space. This has saved me so much squabbling! Students who have trouble keeping their hands to themselves have a clear, visual reminder when they see the tape.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #006b6e;\"><strong>4.\u00a0<b>Provide visual reminders.<\/b>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">I have T-charts with \u201cyes\u201d and \u201cno\u201d behaviors posted in the classroom for many of our activities. I use visuals from <a href=\"http:\/\/lessonpix.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">LessonPix<\/a> ($36 for a yearly subscription), but you can also just use images from Google. When a student is displaying a \u201cno\u201d behavior, you can simply point to the corresponding image rather than having to verbally redirect each time. You can also make a mini T-chart for the student to tape on his or her desk.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2755\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rocketshipschools.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/rocketship-visual-anchor.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2755\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2755\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rocketshipschools.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/rocketship-visual-anchor.jpg?w=300\" alt=\"Giving visual and explicit directions about expectations in the classroom can help all students succeed. \" width=\"300\" height=\"198\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rocketshipschools.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/rocketship-visual-anchor.jpg 1033w, https:\/\/www.rocketshipschools.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/rocketship-visual-anchor-300x198.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.rocketshipschools.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/rocketship-visual-anchor-768x506.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.rocketshipschools.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/rocketship-visual-anchor-1024x675.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2755\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Giving visual and explicit directions about expectations in the classroom can help all students succeed.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #006b6e;\"><strong>5.\u00a0<b>Use privacy shields<\/b>.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>You can buy packs of them or easily make your own by cutting a tri-fold poster in half horizontally. These are primarily used to prevent cheating during tests, but they\u2019re also great for lessening distractions! I love using them during computer time because it\u2019s so difficult for some of my students not to watch what their friends are doing.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #006b6e;\"><strong>6.\u00a0<b>Allow the student to stand while working<\/b>.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>I have some students\u00a0who simply cannot stay sitting for more than a few minutes. If the student tends to wander when she\u2019s standing up, try outlining the area around his desk with masking tape (similar to number 3) to create a clear boundary.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #006b6e;\"><strong>7.\u00a0<b>Provide frequent brain breaks<\/b>.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>My students are obsessed with doing brain breaks on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gonoodle.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Go Noodle<\/a>, which is well-designed and free! Students can follow along with these short videos and dance, do yoga, jog in place and more, all while earning points for their <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.gonoodle.com\/2014\/03\/new-gonoodle-champs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cute classroom champs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, all of these strategies require a lot of front-loading and initial practice. But the time spent preparing is quickly made up once the routines become second nature and both you, and your students, are able to focus more energy on what really matters: learning!<\/p>\n<p>How do you accommodate for all learners?
