It depends on who you ask. While the use of technology and computers in our schools has greatly increased in the last several years, the physical act of writing develops many areas of the brain. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aota.org\/about-occupational-therapy\/patients-clients\/childrenandyouth\/schools\/handwriting.aspx\">AOTA<\/a> defines handwriting as <em>\u201c\u2026a complex process of managing written language by coordinating the eyes, arms, hands, pencil grip, letter formation and body posture<\/em>.\u201d Handwriting is more than just getting letters down on paper \u2013 it\u2019s a skill that develops young brains. Here are some ideas\u00a0to consider as we build our student\u2019s handwriting abilities.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #006b6e;\"><strong>1. Develop fine motor skills.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Fine motor skill is the coordination of the small muscles of our hands with our eyes. Our students may not come to school with fully developed fine motor skills, which will impact their ability to engage in many classroom tasks such as handwriting, scissor use and management of classroom tools. In order for our students to succeed in school, it is imperative that we foster the development of these skills. Try adding these activities to your classroom workstations:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Add tongs to a literacy center in order to improve dexterity and the skill side of the hand<\/li>\n<li>Use small manipulatives as counters to encourage a mature pincer grasp<\/li>\n<li>Have students roll out play dough or clay to build the arches of their hands and visual motor skills as they turn their rolled dough into shapes for a math workstation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Know what is expected of your students developmentally, and reach out to your occupational therapist if you notice that your student\u2019s skills are delayed. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ashforddocs.com\/131126-PSY104\/W-03\/motor-skills.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Here<\/a> are developmental expectations for\u00a0young students.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #006b6e;\"><strong>2.\u00a0<b>It&#8217;s more than pen and paper.<\/b>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Handwriting goes beyond just the tools that are used to get words on paper. Desk and chair heights are important for our students to be able to concentrate on their writing. While<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3053\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3053\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3053\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rocketshipschools.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/rocketship_spark_15043095-1.jpg?w=300\" alt=\"Educaci\u00f3n Cohete\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rocketshipschools.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/rocketship_spark_15043095-1.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/www.rocketshipschools.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/rocketship_spark_15043095-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.rocketshipschools.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/rocketship_spark_15043095-1-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.rocketshipschools.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/rocketship_spark_15043095-1-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.rocketshipschools.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/rocketship_spark_15043095-1-720x480.jpg 720w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-3053\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Posture and desk size all contribute to proper\u00a0handwriting.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>our students share desks, there are easy adaptations that we can make to the physical environment to ensure that each of our students is set up properly.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Add a footrest for those student\u2019s whose feet don\u2019t touch the ground<\/li>\n<li>Add a seat cushion for those student\u2019s who are hunching their shoulders in order to reach the desktop<\/li>\n<li>Add a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.therapyshoppe.com\/category\/P1759-desktop-writing-slant-boards-slantboards-for-writing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">slantboard<\/a> to the desktop for those students who are leaning over their desk in order to see their work<\/li>\n<li>Allow the use of a clipboard for those student\u2019s who are not able to manage their papers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If students are comfortable and able to maintain an upright posture, they will be able to access the academic task presented, rather than focus on meeting their physical needs.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #006b6e;\"><strong>3.\u00a0<b>Teaching formation is important, too!<\/b>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Just as learning any skill requires direct instruction and lots of practice, our students need consistent, direct instruction in letter formation in order to develop their handwriting skills. As little as 15 minutes of daily direct instruction in letter and number formation will build the foundation necessary for handwriting proficiency. Adding <a href=\"http:\/\/mamaot.com\/30-fun-multisensory-writing-activities\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">multi-sensory<\/a> access to letter formation also stimulates more connections in our brains and solidifies the skill. Our students need to know the names of letters, numbers, and shapes as well as demonstrate visual motor coordination and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsrhc.org\/TSRHC\/media\/Media-Library-Files\/PDF\/Position-Statement-and-Remediation_rev11212014.pdf\">orthography<\/a>. If students are struggling with these requisite skills, we need to address these before we can expect handwriting proficiency.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #006b6e;\"><strong>5.\u00a0<b>How can your occupational therapist help?<\/b>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Occupational therapists (OTs) are experts in fine motor skill development, as well as visual motor skill development. OTs are a great resource for teachers to develop fine motor ideas for literacy and math work station; a thought partner in adapting curriculum and the environment to meet individual student\u2019s needs; and specialists in identifying the functional skills that are needed for school participation.
