Papers are shuffling, pencils are dancing, brains are growing: it\u2019s a new school year with our\u00a0Rocketeers! As with every year, students find themselves learning new procedures, brushing\u00a0up on our basics from last year and making the all-important decision of which book to choose\u00a0first from the class library. As teachers, we\u2019re observing each Rocketeer\u2019s individual personality\u00a0and learning how they\u2019ll mesh together as a classroom of scholars and future college grads. Of\u00a0course, this a time that can feel busy and rushed \u2013 we\u2019re learning what kids need and teaching\u00a0them the value of Kimochis. Every day, it\u2019s the silly things that happen and bond us together\u00a0as a group with laughter and joy, reminding us that while mistakes happen and days get busy,\u00a0we are all committed to growing our brains. Being in a first grade classroom during this time is\u00a0a precious place. Students are eager, engaged and motivated to be a part of this journey, but\u00a0sometimes they\u2019re a little distracted…<\/p>\n

Sometimes, we still dream of summer:<\/span><\/h4>\n

\u201cI feel sad because I haven\u2019t been to Hawaii since the last time I went.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sometimes we wonder about the structure of our day:<\/span><\/h4>\n

\u201cWhy do we have to go to lunch even when we are not hungry?\u201d<\/p>\n

Sometimes, we need a little review of our academic songs and chants:<\/span><\/h4>\n

\u201cA, b, c, d, e, f, g………y and z. Now I know my ABC\u2019s. Next time won\u2019t you swing with me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sometimes, we still need to learn about our teacher\u2019s cues:<\/span><\/h4>\n

\u201cWhy do your eyes look so creepy?\u201d<\/p>\n

Sometimes, we get a little confused when introducing ourselves to new friends:<\/span><\/h4>\n

\u201cI was born a little bit here and a little bit in Mexico.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sometimes, we forget about the purpose of our read aloud after seeing a picture of a cookie\u00a0in the book:<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n

\u201cMMMMMMM!\u201d \u2013 Whole Class<\/p>\n

And sometimes, our Rocketeers are so persistent and determined in their educational goals\u00a0that they want to blast off further:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cBut…when will we actually get on the rocket ship to outer space?\u201d<\/p>\n

\n

Joanna joined the Rocketship team after six years of teaching first grade in the traditional public\u00a0school setting. She earned her BA in Liberal Studies from Loyola Marymount University and her\u00a0MA in Reading from National University. Joanna looks forward to seeing her students hard work\u00a0yield high achievement and life long learning skills. During her time outside of school, Joanna\u00a0enjoys going to professional sporting events and traveling to see family and friends.<\/em><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
