With spring break just ending, summer is just a few short months away. It\u2019s never too early to start planning your summer activities! With so many amazing programs offered in our communities, it\u2019s hard to keep track of them all – that\u2019s why we did the work for you. <\/span>Research shows<\/span><\/a> students risk regression during summer months, so what better way to keep that brain healthy than by finding fun ways to keep learning? We hand-picked some great activities in each of our regions that will stretch your student\u2019s thinking this summer.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Nashville\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Soak up a Story:\u00a0<\/b><\/span>It can be exhausting to play in the sun all day. Why not seek solace from the Tennessee sun while listening to your favorite story? <\/span>Nashville Public Libraries<\/span><\/a> hosts story times at their various locations multiple times weekly. While you\u2019re there, sign up for the summer reading challenge (details coming soon!) to encourage your scholar to explore the many great things about literacy.<\/span><\/p>\n

Seek the Stars:\u00a0<\/b><\/span>Is your student curious about space and the solar system? Take her to <\/span>Vanderbilt University Dyer Observatory\u2019s Open House Day<\/span><\/a>, held on the first Tuesday of each month. She can take a peek in the telescope and can even ask questions to the on-site astronomers — all for free.<\/span><\/p>\n

Cultivate their Curiosity:\u00a0<\/b><\/span>Does your budding scientist ask about the why behind every occurrence in nature? Take him to the<\/span> Adventure Science Center<\/span><\/a>! Not only can he learn what a bee colony looks like from the inside, but he can also experience free chemistry classes. The center also offers a <\/span>great summer camp<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Learn All Summer Long:<\/span>\u00a0<\/b>Speaking of camp, there are many awesome opportunities all across Music City, from <\/span>Art Camp at the Frist Center<\/span><\/a> (also offers need-based scholarships) to <\/span>Mr Bond and the Science Guys science camp<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>For more ideas, don\u2019t miss <\/span>this comprehensive list<\/span><\/a> assembled by Vanderbilt University\u2019s Child and Family Center.<\/span><\/p>\n

DC<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n

Rewarding Reading:\u00a0<\/b><\/span>If your student begs to be taken out to the ballgame this summer, why not encourage her to sign up for the DC Library Summer Reading Challenge? Is your scholar more of a scientist? Join the STEAM Team on Sunday afternoons. Does she love to craft? Every Tuesday there\u2019s an event for that too. Don\u2019t miss out on the fun this summer – check out <\/span>DC Public Libraries<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sharpen Your History Chops:\u00a0<\/b><\/span>Was your student crazy over the velociraptors in Jurassic World? Stoke their curiosity by visiting the <\/span>Smithsonian Institution Natural History Museum<\/span><\/a>. If the free admission, air conditioning and dinosaur exhibit aren\u2019t enough to get you in, don\u2019t forget the museum also boasts an insect zoo with live tarantula feedings daily.<\/span><\/p>\n

Soar to New Heights:\u00a0<\/b><\/span>Did you know the <\/span>National Air and Space Museum<\/span><\/a> hosts <\/span>the largest collection of air and spacecrafts in the world? Spend a day here and you\u2019ll get to experience everything from observing craters on the moon through a telescope to climbing aboard a spacecraft simulator. Check out the <\/span>Families page<\/span><\/a> for tips on planning your visit.<\/span><\/p>\n

Capital Camps:\u00a0<\/b><\/span>In addition to the many free offerings on tap at the Smithsonian, there are also many rich experiences to be had all summer long at its <\/span>summer camps<\/span><\/a> as well as <\/span>safari camp at the National Zoo<\/span><\/a>, Nearby Arena Stage also has <\/span>a variety of arts camps<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Bay Area<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n

Play Hard:<\/strong><\/span> \u00a0Budding thespians, paleontologists and botanists will all find something intriguing at the <\/span>Children\u2019s Discovery Museum<\/span><\/a> in San Jose! Whether students uncover fossils in the mammoth exhibit or create massive bubbles in the gallery, this is a guaranteed fun time for all. Chances are some of your students may have visited the museum already during a field trip – why not have them help plan the visit?<\/span><\/p>\n

Step up to the Challenge:<\/b> <\/span>This summer, the <\/span>SJ Public Library <\/span><\/a>V\u00e0 <\/span>Redwood City Public Library <\/span><\/a>are both hosting summer reading challenges. More information will be coming soon, but get ahead of the game by signing up for a library card today!<\/span><\/p>\n

Calling all Engineers:\u00a0<\/b><\/span>Living in the heart of the Silicon Valley offers lots of access to innovative ideas. Learn about the history of technological innovation at the <\/span>Computer History Museum<\/span><\/a>! Your future programmer will have an opportunity to engage in exhibits and discussions about both the history and future of computers and technology. <\/span>This museum is recommended for students in grades three and higher. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Cali-Style Camps:\u00a0<\/b><\/span>The Bay Area is where <\/span>Camp Galileo<\/span><\/a> got its start, with a focus on innovation and a different theme every week to immerse students in design, art, science, and problem-solving. There are \u00a0two camp locations for elementary school students in San Jose and one in Palo Alto. (Compared to other offerings, this program is fairly pricey, but some need-based scholarships are on offer.) Want to focus just on robotics? Be sure to check out <\/span>Wizbots.<\/span><\/a> Fancy a stage instead? You\u2019ll want to check out the theater camp hosted by the renowned <\/span>Children’s Musical Theater<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Milwaukee<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n

Take a Trip:\u00a0<\/b><\/span>A visit to the <\/span>Milwaukee Public Museum<\/span><\/a> can mean many things: a trek through Africa, a show at the Dome Theater or a trip through time to see how Native Americans lived. <\/span><\/p>\n

Be a Super Reader:\u00a0<\/b><\/span>Head over to any branch of the <\/span>Milwaukee Public Library<\/span><\/a> to sign up for the summer reading challenge. Just by reading this summer, you could win prizes \u2013 last year, some kids won a chance to be on the field at the Brewers\u2019 stadium. Not sure what to read? MPL has you covered with their<\/span> reading recommendations<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Dance on Down:\u00a0<\/b><\/span>Is your student one of the most enthusiastic dancers at Launch? A visit to <\/span>Discovery World<\/span><\/a> might be for you! The new Music Factory exhibit lets kids of all ages engage in the principles of music automation. If your scholar is more of a science fan, consider visiting Discovery World\u2019s many science activities. They\u2019ll learn about everything from the sky, to the lakes, to the sometimes impolite world of the human body.<\/span><\/p>\n

Even More To Discover:\u00a0<\/b><\/span>If Discovery World sounds enticing, you\u2019ll want to make sure to check out their <\/span>summer camp offerings<\/span><\/a>. Other, more outdoorsy options include the <\/span>Schlitz Audubon Nature Center camp<\/span><\/a> and the camp at the <\/span>Urban Ecology Center camp<\/span><\/a> (scholarships available).<\/span><\/p>\n
