The Sound of Success: How Music and Community Propelled Rocketship Dream Community Prep to Tennessee Reward School Status

When you step onto the campus of Rocketship Dream Community Prep (RDCP), the first thing you notice isn’t the data—it’s the sound. As a music-enriched school, the hallways hum with a rhythm that starts at the morning “Launch” and continues through math raps and humanities chants. This “intentional joy” isn’t just a background track; it is the engine behind RDCP being named a 2025 Reward School by the Tennessee Department of Education.

The designation comes on the heels of a landmark year. RDCP earned an “A” on the state report card, a recognition that places the school in the top 21% of all schools statewide. In the Antioch cluster, RDCP emerged as a leader, tying for the highest overall results and ranking number one for math growth. Most importantly, the school is proving that the opportunity gap can be closed: among MNPS schools serving economically disadvantaged students, RDCP scored above the 90th percentile in both math and reading.

Where Music Meets the Academic Core

Principal Antigua Joseph-Woods sees these metrics as a direct reflection of the school’s culture.

“When you walk into Dream Community Prep every morning, you feel it—the joy, the music, the pride our students have in their learning,” Joseph-Woods said. “That joy is directly connected to the growth we’re seeing. These results belong to our kids, our families, and our teachers who show up every day believing in what’s possible for this community.”

For our Rocketeers, music isn’t a separate elective—it is intentionally interwoven into the academic core, where rhythm and melody serve as tools to unlock complex concepts in math, literacy, and science. Whether students are internalizing humanities through song or mastering the violin and hand drums to sharpen their focus, this artistic immersion drives the critical thinking necessary for high-level achievement.

A Community-Driven Engine: Parent Power and the Rocketship Pillars

This success is fundamentally a testament to the Antioch community. RDCP was built by and for the families of this neighborhood, and that local heart is codified through the Rocketship pillar of Parent Power. Our families are the architects of the RDCP experience; they shaped everything from the school’s name to its core values. When parents lead community meetings or collaborate with teachers on student goals, they create a culture of accountability and belonging that stretches from the classroom to the living room.

In addition to this local flair, RDCP achieves these results by engaging the two other critical pillars of the Rocketship model: Personalized Learning and Talent Development.

Our educators don’t work in isolation; they receive consistent coaching to refine their craft. This ensures that every instructional minute is high-impact. That professional excellence, in turn, fuels a learning experience that meets every Rocketeer exactly where they are. By using real-time data to guide both whole and small group instruction, our teachers can tailor their approach to each student’s unique pace—accelerating those ready to sprint while providing targeted support to those who need it most.

It is this specific synergy between proven systems and local community heart that Dr. Eric Dailey, Executive Director, believes is the “secret sauce” for the region’s future.

“This recognition is a celebration of the Dream Community Prep community and the intentional work happening every day in classrooms and with families,” said Dailey. “We’re not only proud of what RDCP achieved this year—we’re carrying forward the lessons learned here to strengthen teaching, learning, and family partnership across our entire regional network.”
