3 Weekly Ways To Build Strong Parent-Teacher Connections: An Interview with Mrs. Aqeel

Ever wonder what makes a strong parent-teacher relationship? It’s not just about parent-teacher conferences or report cards—it’s about the little, consistent efforts that keep communication open and supportive.

Teachers who build strong connections with parents see firsthand how it benefits students. When parents feel involved, kids feel supported, and learning becomes a true team effort. But with busy schedules on both sides, how do teachers make this happen every week?

Building strong parent-teacher connections is key to student success. We were able to sit down with Mrs. Aqeel, a dedicated educator at Rocketship Dream Community Prep, to learn about three simple ways she connects with parents every week. From quick check-ins to sharing helpful resources and fostering parent involvement, she shares how these small, consistent efforts make a big difference.

1. Weekly Check-Ins: Keeping Communication Open

Q: How do you stay in touch with parents every week?

“At Dream, we use different communication platforms like Dojo, ParentSquare, and email, but my personal favorite is texting. Calls are tough to answer during school hours, and I don’t want to miss any important messages that come through. Most of my parents reach out after hours, once they’ve had time to process their child’s day.”

Q: Do you have a strategy for making communication easy and effective?

“At the start of each school year, I share my direct phone number with parents for emergencies. That small gesture builds trust right away. If they know they can reach me when needed, they feel more connected to the classroom.”

Q: Can you share an example of when a simple check-in made a big impact?

“Early in the year, a mother reached out about a bullying concern. Her son had transferred to Dream because of past experiences, and she was worried it was happening again. I reassured her that I’d look into it right away. After investigating, I confirmed the issue and took immediate action—adjusting seating arrangements, addressing the behavior, and keeping parents updated. Thanks to open communication, we prevented losing a valuable family. Now, the two students involved? They’re in the same book club and actually enjoy each other’s company!”

2. Sharing Weekly Tips & Resources for Learning at Home

“I provide weekly homework packets and upload them to Dojo, so parents always have access. I also make sure to share examples, helpful video links, and even offer Zoom calls when needed. This way, parents don’t feel lost when their child comes home with questions.”

Q: Do parents engage with the resources you share?

“Yes! Every parent communicates differently, so I adjust to their preferences. Some parents love Dojo, others prefer texting, and a few will just call for quick questions—like checking the dress code for an event. No matter how they reach out, my goal is to make sure they feel supported and involved.”

3. Encouraging Parent Involvement: Creating a Real Community

Q: What are some fun ways you involve parents in school activities?

“I believe parents are more engaged when they see the human side of teachers. My family is very active in after-school activities, and I invite parents to join in whenever possible. Whether it’s story time at the library, hiking, kickball at the park, or cookouts, these moments create real connections outside the classroom.”

Q: Have you seen a difference in parent involvement through these efforts?

“Absolutely! When parents feel part of the school community, they’re more invested in their child’s education. I can’t name just one parent who has made an impact because so many have. But I have to give a special shoutout to the Lindemyer family for their incredible volunteerism—not just for our class, but for anyone who needs help. They truly embody what community is all about.”

Final Thoughts: Why Parent-Teacher Connections Matter

Q: What’s your advice for teachers looking to strengthen parent relationships?

“Engage with parents the way you’d want your child’s teacher to engage with you. And most importantly—make it fun! When parents see you as a real person, the connections you build will be stronger than ever.”

>At the end of the day, students thrive when teachers and parents work together as a team. Whether through simple text check-ins, sharing helpful resources, or inviting parents into the school community, these small efforts add up to something much bigger—a supportive, engaged environment where students can succeed.
